I've always hesitated to try lenses sigma, because I've heard a lot of problems people have with the focus on them. I missed the considered f1.4 50mm f1.4 and 30 mm although it received stellar reviews for the most part. When he came out with the Sigma 85mm f1.4 less than half the price of 85 mm f1.2 II Canon L, you had to see if it would save me a lot in my quest for a 85mm.
I took some time to compare it with the 85mm f1.8 and 85mm f1. 2 L II for renting all three before making any decision, and I have to say that this goal is really impressive!
The Sigma lens is much lighter than the Canon f1.2 and therefore much easier to handle. The first thing that comes to mind when putting on my camera canon f1.2 is as yet feel uncomfortable - which is the weight and the "top-heavy" really throw off-balance (I'm using a 7D) and makes the entire set-up feeling bad. With the Sigma, I have this feeling .... feels good. It almost feels like a rubber, plastic, and while the canon f1.2 feels more solid, the Sigma feels modern to me. The Canon f1.8 is no slouch, but it feels lacking in comparison to the other two in quality construction. The Sigma comes with a unique 2-part umbrella to help avoid vignetting hoods in full-frame cameras. There is a central section that leaves out if you are using a full frame camera, but then add it back if you have a culture chamber.
As for the quality of the image, I will not go into too much detail, because other reviews across the web have been much more scientific evidence that I and provide images to compare. I will just summarize my experiences through: in my opinion, the Canon f1.2 is sharper photos, especially in the center of the image. Sigma outperforms the other 2 in the corner sharpness though. The f1.8 has the fastest autofocus, the Sigma f1.2 away and trailing only slightly behind. For quality bokeh, who prefer the Sigma at f1.2. Color and contrast is a tie between f1.2 and Sigma ... Sigma offers a little warmer pictures. The Sigma takes flares better than f1.8, but not as good as the f1.2. The three seemed to handle the wear color well in my tests. As an overview, I realized that he enjoyed the best images f1.2, but I did enjoy $ 1000 more? Probably not. The Sigma really was not far behind the f1.2 the image quality.
If I were a professional photographer, I'd probably go with the Sigma f1.2 canon on just because that slight advantage in image quality and additional light from the f1.2 will probably pay for itself over time. As an amateur but I do not see myself paying more than twice the lens a little better. The Sigma really offers an excellent choice for a middle ground between f1.8 and f1.2 Canon. In addition, it opens a new path for indoor sports photographers to capture fast action. Due to its slow autofocus, constant f1.2 found that the guards were less when shooting indoors fast action. Sigma f1. 8 and handled these situations well. I shoot a lot of concerts and contests indoor dog, so the Sigma is now going to be my go-to lens for those. The f1.8 would be a good option and is probably one of the best quality / highest value is in my opinion, but the best image quality of the Sigma is evident. Furthermore, the additional light of wider aperture really helps in many situations. I also like the bokeh quality much better than the f1.8.
